Today was our last hurrah. We got up early and strode towards Wallsend, avoiding the last remnants of the Friday night revellers on the Quayside.
It was an interesting route, I grew up on Tyneside but the green pathway out to St Anthony’s point took me by surprise, until I realised that it had been the old leadworks and had been returned to nature because the soil was too poisoned for alternative use. Despite this it was a beautiful and peaceful haven along the banks of the river.
After a couple of hours we had nearly reached the end point when we came across a Roman Baths, excavated in 2014 alongside the old Swan Hunter shipyards,
and then shortly after that the final section of wall,
Then, we were there, Segedunum, the end of the wall, the final fortress in the 84 mile wall which marked the ultimate border of the Roman Empire.
It has been an amazing experience, painful at times and with achingly beautiful scenery, an adventure which we won’t soon forget.
And we have this lovely certificate to remember it by.
I definitely recommend this walk both to experienced long-distance walkers and to those who want to try it, below are some links to help you on your adventures:
